About this object
A photograph of a group of women lined up on the edge of canoe on the Tutaekuri River. The photograph appears to have been taken during a regatta or carnival, circa 1920.

The women are standing in swimming costumes with one leg on the edge of the waka as if they are about to jump into the water for a swimming race. A man is seated at the far end of the canoe and leaning slightly looking at the women’s feet on the edge of the canoe.

In the background a rope is stretched from the bank of the river across the river, presumably marking the race start line.

The women’s swimming costumes with the patch on the front suggest this might have been a Te Awa Swimming Club event.
