About this object
A photograph depicting a group of young women dressed as Māori in a canoe on the Tutaekuri River.
The photograph appears to have been taken during a regatta or carnival, circa 1920. The canoe is positioned on an angle across the river with the bow heading toward the camera. Seated in the bow are two children. The boy has his back to the camera with his face in profile. The young girl has a darkened face and is holding a Māori doll.
The women are dressed in piupiu that are worn draped over one shoulder. They are also wearing headdresses with feathers. At the stern of the canoe there is a male paddler. There appears to be a landing or a jetty further up the river at the left.
Photographer, Sorrell and Son.
Date, circa 1920.
