Brief Description
Newspaper cutting from the Wellington Independent newspaper titled: Military Operations. There is a letter copied in full from Colonel Whitmore to Colonel Haultain from Fort Galatea on 18 May 1869.

Whitmore states that he has wrote the letter since he fears that although he has sent his personal diary to Haultain, he has sent this letter overland to avoid delays. Gives a detailed account of military actions in the Whakatane and Urewera regions from 6 May to 11 May 1869. Gives praise to his officers for leading his men and writes a post-script that his diary has been returned and that he will again endeavour to mail it to Haultain.

Also includes a letter from Lieutenant Colonel St John to Colonel Whitmore dated 9 May 1869. Describes actions in the Whakatane region by himself and Major Mair against Pai Mārire forces. Includes a list of dead and wounded during these actions with description of injuries and dates.
