About this object
View of Napier Hill comprised of three individual photographs that have been joined to form a panorama. A note that accompanies the photograph identifies the subject as the view from the Bestall's family home in Priestly Road, Napier. The photograph is thought to have been taken around 1910.

Napier Prison is located on the side of Napier Hill. This building complex is identified by an arrow that has been drawn on the photograph. Hukarere Road and Hadfield Terrace are located on the top of the hill near the centre of the photograph. Mahia Homestead is visible on the corner of Hukarere Road and Hadfield Terrace. Napier Boys’ High School and Napier Girls’ High School are located on the extreme right of the image. Coote Road is also visible.

The ocean is visible in the distance on the left side of the photograph.

Photographer, possibly Leo Bestall.

This is an addition and change to my previous comments for two photos about the tennis courts in Cornwall Park. The club that occupied the Cornwall Park courts in 1906 was the Hastings Lawn Tennis Club, that in 1908 were starting to look at purchasing their own grounds which by 1910 they had done, added to in 1920 to make the Whitehead Road complex we know today. After the HLTC moved, the Hastings Park Tennis Club was established that rented two of the 6 courts at Cornwall Park from the council. I can't follow them beyond 1920 as papers past ceases covering local papers then, and from the 1945 aerial photo, the courts no longer existed. The Holt display house is on the site of the tennis courts today.
