About this object
A photograph of the proclamation of George V as King of England and the United Kingdom in Napier, 10 May 1910.

The image depicts a large crowd gathered outside the Council Chambers on Tennyson Street. An official is standing on the steps of the Chambers reading the official proclamation to the crowd concerning the death of Edward VII (6 May 1910) and the accession of George V to the throne. Most of the men in the crowd have removed their hats as a sign of respect.

Marine Parade is visible in the background of the image. A small Norfolk Pine is visible on the roadside in front of the sea wall. A group of school girls in boater hats are discernible under the side windows of the Council Chambers frontage. The entrance of the Council Chambers is decorated with material.
