About this object
A photograph of the Queen Carnival second place winner riding a buggy pulled by a donkey.

The photograph is dated March or April 1943. The competition appears to have been a fund raising event concerning the armed forces and nurses serving in the Second World War. It was possibly a Women's War Service Auxiliary event. The woman seated on the buggy in a naval uniform is identified as Betty Prebble. She was the Navy Queen and second prize winner in the Queen Carnival. The man seated next to her is identified on the back of the photograph as RNPD Grindlay. The man in cap and uniform standing on the road side is believed to be Dave Roberts.

The buggy is travelling down Emerson Street. The intersection with Hastings Street is visible in the background. A police officer and several men are standing on the corner of Emerson and Hastings Street. The Bank of New Zealand building is also visible in the background of the image. Several women spectators are standing on the left in the foreground and at the right on the other side of the foot path. At the left a bicycle is parked outside a barber shop.

It is noted on the back of the photograph that twelve thousand pounds was raised, presumably for the war effort. It is also noted that the donkey was loaned from Mr Green or Gruer from Riverbend Road.
