About this object
A photograph of a ball in celebration of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee celebrated on 22 June 1897.

The photograph is an interior image of the ball held at the Napier Drill Hall.
In the foreground of the image are many children and young people dressed for the occasion. In the centre of the crowd several musicians are visible. These include a bass player and a man seated at a piano with a large pile of music.

In the background more ball attendees are standing and looking toward the camera. These include older participants and several men dressed in military uniform and various formal attire.

The roof of the Napier Drill Hall is hung with flags in a bunting fashion. The circular frame chandeliers hanging from the roof are lit. On the far wall lace drapery is visible as well as a Union Jack with a diamond at its centre. Above the Union Jack a gas lit reads: V R. This stands for Victoria Regina, or Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom in whose honour the ball was held.
