A photograph of bands from the Quick-Step competition marching down Emerson Street, Napier on 26 January 1898.

A band contest was held at 1.30pm at the Marine Parade Band Rotunda later the players formed the massive band depicted here. The procession went from the Band Rotunda along the Parade, Browning Street, Hastings Street, and then down Emerson Street to the Recreation Ground.

Leading the bands is an officer on horseback and a band major holding a mace. The bands and their instruments stretch all the way down Emerson Street to Marine Parade in the distance. Spectators fill both sides of the street and are crowded into the balconies and windows of the surrounding buildings. The identifiable businesses along Emerson Street are as follows: F Wilson and Company, Boot Manufacturers ; F Howard, Watchmaker and Jeweller ; Blythe’s Limited ; Parkers and Company, Outfitters ; R H Robinson, Draper ; and Patterson and Company, Store Keeper.

The photograph is taken near the Dalton Street intersection with Emerson Street, identifiable by the gaps in the buildings at the left and in front of the building occupied by F Wilson and Company.
