McLean writes that he has received a letter from Whitmore dated the 22 regarding his military operations further to the battle for Omarunui on 12 October 1866. He congratulates him on his victory and conveys thanks from the Government to him and his men for their further service in pursuing the Pai Mārire forces through rough terrain.
