About this object
A photograph of the proclamation of Edward VII as King of England and the United Kingdom in late January 1901.

The image depicts a large crowd gathered outside the Council Chambers on Tennyson Street. Three officials are standing on the steps of the Chambers reading the official proclamation concerning the death of Queen Victoria and the accession of Edward VII to the throne. Many of the men in the crowd are in the process of removing their hats as a sign of respect.

Marine Parade is visible in the background of the image. A small Norfolk Pine is visible on the roadside in front of the sea wall. Two horse drawn buggies are visible on Marine Parade at the edge of the gathering. Several military personnel are in the crowd at the centre right. Council workers are evident looking from the opened windows along the Chambers frontage on Tennyson Street.

The front of the Council Chambers is decorated with flags of the Dominions of the British Empire. The photograph is probably dated on the 28th of January. The original proclamation issued on the 23 January 1901 was delayed due to cable interruptions between the United Kingdom and both New Zealand and Australia.
