About this object
A photograph of Mr A E Renouf standing on a float proclaiming the winner in the 1922 Napier Mardi Gras.

The image shows a man in a wig and academic robes holding a paper and speaking to a crowd. Some of the crowd are visible in the foreground of the image although obscured. Behind and to the left of Renouf a woman holding a shepherd’s crook stands with several other women dressed as shepherdesses behind her. Further back on the float a woman dressed as a monarch is seated on a throne holding a mace. A page boy is visible at the left. The back of the float is decorated with a billowing fabric backdrop.

It is noted on the back of the photograph that Mr A E Renouf is pronouncing the float winner as Blythes Department Store. It is also noted that the Carnival Queen, possibly the woman seated in the image, is from Clive. The donor Miss W P Smith is identified as the woman in the straw hat in the foreground of the image.
