About this object
A photograph of a patriotic float in the 1915 Napier Mardi Gras.
The image depicts a partisan float during wartime travelling down Marine Parade. The float is a square frame with fake bars. Inside the float a man is seated in what appears to be a German military uniform. Another man appears to be dressed as a lion tamer. Above the structure a sign reads: Britain’s Menagerie.
The side of the float also has a sign dating the parade, December 1915. The original label of the photograph reads : Kaiser in a cage. The image is taken from behind a group of onlookers lining the parade path. In the Victorian building behind the scene people are standing on the balcony observing the carnival.
