About this object
View of the Money Order and Post Office Savings Bank on the corner of Hastings Street and Dickens Street, Napier, thought to have been taken in 1928. The photograph has been taken from an elevated position on the opposite side of Hastings Street looking west. The two storey building is in the process of being demolished to make way for a new Post Office building designed by Government Architect, J T Mair. Three people can be seen working on top of the building, which has been reduced to a single storey.
Dickens Street is located on the left side of the photograph. Among the businesses that are visible along Dickens Street are the Caledonian Hotel and Sargood, Son & Ewen Limited. Further along Dickens Street, the top of the Dalgety's building can be seen. Tram lines run along Hastings and Dickens Streets.
To the right of building site, there is a wall featuring an advertisement for an event at the Gaiety de Luxe. A barbers pole is visible on the extreme right.
The spire of St Patrick's Catholic church is visible in the distance.
