About this object
Group portrait of the Blythes Team dressed for a Patriotic Dance organised by the Napier 30,000 Club that was held at Thompson Payne's Skating Rink in August 1914.

The members of the group are all dressed as Pierrot, a character whose origins can be traced back to the Commedia de l'Arte, a form of theatre that dates back to the late seventeenth century. Replicating the costume traditionally worn by Pierrot, the men of the group are dressed in a loose white blouse with large buttons and white pants. The costumes also feature a frilled collaret and a conical shaped hat that were also sometimes worn by the character. The women wear a variant on this costume. Their dresses, which are of a darker colour, feature the same large pompom buttons and frilled collarets of their male counterparts. They also wear conical hats matching the shade of their dresses.

The members of the group are identified on the back of the photograph. Pictured standing from left: Miss M Armour, Mr Fairbrother, Miss Rawston, Mr K Hasted, Miss V Higgins, Miss A Ashton, and Mr B Alexander.
Seated: Mr Arthur Bradshaw, Mr John Campbell, Mrs Floss Kinnear, Mr Norm Wallace, and Miss M Whitaker.

The group is posed against a painted backdrop.
