About this object
A photograph of the Coronation Celebration for Edward VII (crowned 9 August 1902).

The image depicts a large crowd gathered near the band rotunda on Marine Parade and along the street. The spectators are observing an exhibition by a group of Māori men in a waka taua, or war canoe. The men are dressed in short sleeved white shirts and piupiu with trousers underneath. At the head of the boat a woman is seated.

At the left of the image the edge of the decorated Band Rotunda is visible. Presumably the Masonic Hotel is at the rear of the camera.
