About this object
A photograph of a celebratory procession in Napier. The parade is coming down Hastings Street and turning into Browning Street in the foreground. It appears to be heading toward Marine Parade. The image is thought to depict part of the celebrations of the Coronation of Edward VII (crowned 9 August 1902).

Several buggies filled with onlookers are in the foreground of the image. Spectators line the streets and are visible on balconies and shop awnings along Hastings Street. At the corner a single horse is pulling a construction of a large head and upper torso. The figure is wearing a top hat and suit and is smoking a cigar. He is surrounded by flags including the Union Jack, Lion Flag and other trappings.

Along Hastings Street many other horse drawn floats are travelling including one with a large Australian flag. Flags are also strung on wires across the streets in a bunting fashion. On the corner of Hastings Street and Browning Street the Hannah’s Department Store is evident.
