A photograph of two floats in the New Napier Carnival Parade, January 1933.
The New Napier Carnival, held from 21 to 28 January 1933, celebrated the opening of Napier after the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. In the foreground is the Acetone Illuminating and Welding Company Ltd. float. The float is constructed on the back of a flatbed truck. Two men in white shirts and welding aprons are standing on the back of the truck next to welding equipment and oxygen tanks. On an a frame structure over their heads is the company sign. Along the side of the truck is a sign reading: Oxygen : Master of Metals. The front of the float is decorated with palm fronts and ribbon. At the top of the cab is a painted image of a welder.
Behind this float is the Napier Gas Company float which is also on the back of a flatbed truck. There appears to be white ware and household appliances on the back of the truck. The sign writing on the cover above the appliances reads: Good Luck to Napier. The floats are travelling south along Napier's Marine Parade. Norfolk Pines are visible in the background lining the Parade.
