About this object
A photograph of a car float in the New Napier Carnival Parade, January 1933.

The New Napier Carnival, held from 21 to 28 January 1933, celebrated the opening of Napier after the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. The image depicts an open top car decorated with hand painted signs concerning the business Hector McGregor Limited . Three large Mardi Gras heads are worn by three men perched up on the back of the car. Some of the signage on the float reads: Daimler, Dam Liar; Big Heads of the Electrical Tra (de?), Phillips, Rogers, H. McGregor (in bold); Closed for Repairs; Live Wires. Various other signs and painting on the car is obscured.

Spectators heads are visible in the foreground of the image. Across the street spectators are in a thin line against a backdrop of building reconstruction still underway. At the left a brick building is being reconstructed. At the right building materials are piled up. A woman is standing on a hessian sack to get a better view of the parade near the top left of the image.
