View of the Clarendon Hotel taken from the foot of Shakespeare Road looking towards Napier Hill.
The name Brennan's Clarendon Hotel appears across the top of the façade. The original façade of the building has been modified prior to the photograph being taken to enable shops to occupy part of the ground floor of the building. Signs on the façade indicate that one of these shops sold homemade cakes, ice-cream and soda. The hotel bar occupies the right side of the building on the ground floor.
The façade of the building is in poor condition. The paint on the façade has peeled and bubbled and some of the ground floor windows are broken. The telegraph pole to the right of the hotel also appears to be damaged indicating that this photograph may have been taken following the Hawke's Bay earthquake in 1931. The earthquake resulted in a fire that damaged much of the central city.
A group of five men pose for the photograph in front of the hotel. Tram lines are visible in the foreground.
