About this object
A photograph depicting a procession of volunteer troops for the South African War down a central Napier street.
The troops probably form part of the Company One, Number One Division. The photograph is either taken prior to October 1899 and the first deployment of New Zealand troops from Wellington or at the time of the deployment of the Second Contingent which sailed from Wellington aboard the S.S. Waiwera on 21st January 1900.
The man leading the procession on horseback and in a hard hat is the City Marshall, Waterworth. The troops following behind appear to be a brass band and are holding brass trumpets, bassoons, horns and a large drum.
Spectators are visible all the way along the street and in the windows above the shops.
The Union Jack hangs in the foreground of the image and from a shop sign in the left of the image. The shops along the street are decorated with foliage and saplings. On the shop at the left of the image a sign reads : Good Luck Our Boys.
Photographer, unknown.
Date, between 1899 and 1902.
