About this object
A photograph depicting the departure of troops for the South African War.

The image is taken from Glasgow wharf with Bluff Hill in the background. The troops are lined up along the wharf in the foreground. The troops are likely from Company One, Division One. The photograph is either taken prior to October 1899 and the first deployment of New Zealand troops from Wellington or at the time of the deployment of the Second Contingent which sailed from Wellington aboard the S.S. Waiwera on 21st January 1900.

Spectators are visible all the way along the wharf and the entrance to the breakwater. People are evident lining the entire roadway along the base of Bluff Hill. People are also visible standing along the top of Bluff Hill.There are several well dressed ladies and men standing near the buildings at the entrance to Glasgow wharf in the foreground and at the left of the image. Several vessels are moored along the wharf including a rigged ship at the far right.
