About this object
View of the Criterion Hotel, Oamaru, taken from Tyne Street looking towards Harbour Street, possibly in the early 1880s. Designed by Forrester and Lemon, the hotel was built in 1877. The proprietor of the hotel at the time that the photograph was taken was William Gillespie.

Commission agents Connell and Clowes occupy the ground floor of the southern section of the building. The company's name appears on the parapet of the building and in the ground floor windows on the right. The company relocated out of this building in 1881.

The Union Building, built in 1877, is visible on the extreme left of the image.
