Object detail

Brief Description
Four letters regarding information about a letter from Te Hareti to Te Hapuku in 1862 written in Māori.

a) Letter from Clyde R H Taylor to Alice Woodhouse, dated 24 June 1959 suggesting that she should follow up on a Herald-Tribune article of June 12 and that the letter should be donated to a museum.

b) Letter from Alice Woodhouse to Canon Kaa, dated 23 March 1960, thanking him for his translation of the letter and asking if Te Hareti should be Kareti and if so if this was Sir George Grey signing his name in Māori.

c) Letter from E Hill to Alice Woodhouse, dated 26 July 1960, informing her that the Alexander Turnbull Library was unable to find any trace of a Te Hareti or Kareti. Also mentions a brief history of Captain William Ellis, in which the Māori form of the name is Te Harete.
