About this object
A photograph of HRH Edward, Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII and Duke of Windsor) reviewing troops in Hastings in 1920 during his Royal visit to New Zealand.

The tour following World War One served as both an expression of gratitude and an exercise in consolidation of the empire. Soldiers are lined up in rows wearing full uniform at the left of the picture. In the right of the frame the Prince of Wales is in the process of disembarking from his vehicle, a Studebaker. The car was provided by The Tourist Motor Co. Ltd, Hastings, as was the chauffeur, G H (Bert) Annetts. The other car behind illustrates the small convoy and entourage accompanying the Prince.

Photographer, H J Lovell-Smith.
