A photograph of celebrations around the opening of the East Coast Railway.
It is believed this photograph depicts part of a celebration of the opening of the first section of the railway from Napier to Eskdale on 14 November 1922 by Right Hon. W F Massey.
The photograph is taken looking at a boat named the Karere alongside a pier. The pier is decorated with bunting. Spectators are in situ along the pier.
