About this object
A photograph of a large crowd gathered to farewell troops departing for the South African War, taken circa 1900.
The troops can be seen standing in front of the band rotunda on Marine Parade which has been decorated with farewell signs.
The Masonic Hotel is visible at the left of the image. The hotel balconies are crowded with spectators. In the foreground of the image a group is seated in a car observing the activities. Two men are standing on the front of the car. One is looking toward the band rotunda and the other down Emerson Street.
A New Zealand flag is flying on a pole near the rotunda. A ceremonial arch is visible in the distance on the entrance to Tennyson Street opposite Herschell Street.

Are the three almost identical houses tucked into the hill in a row in the background behind the second and smaller flag, the ones on Seacliff Terrace?
