About this object
A view of Port Ahuriri from Napier Hill, possibly taken in the 1880s. The South Pond is located in the foreground of the image. Among the buildings that are visible in Ahuriri are the Port School (1879), which is located on the extreme left, and St Andrew’s Church (built circa 1880) on Ossian Street. At right is the Commercial Hotel on Waghorne Street. Established in 1858 as the Bird in Hand, the Commercial Hotel operated under this name between 1861 and June 1887 when it became the Union Hotel. Napier Hill is visible in the distance.
