About this object
View of Hastings Street from Browning Street, possibly taken in the 1880s or 1890s. On the extreme left of the image, R Hannah and Company (The Hawke’s Bay and Napier Cash Boot Market) stands on the corner of Hastings Street and Browning Street. Among the businesses that are visible along the left side of the street are W Prebble (fruiterer), Jacob’s Fancy Repository, David Levi (tobacconist), the Masonic Hotel, Neal and Close (draper and clothier), S E Cooper (watchmaker and jeweller), Garrett Brothers Boot Shoe Depot (located in Dublin House), the New Zealand Insurance Company, P F Colledge (watchmaker and jeweller), H Williams (ironmonger), and R T Smythe (bookseller and stationer).

On the extreme right of the image the Post Office stands on the corner of Hastings Street and Browning Street. Behind the Post Office is the Bank of New Zealand.

Pedestrians and horse drawn carriages are visible along the street.
