On the extreme right of the photograph is the merchant firm Neal and Close, which occupied this site between 1875 and 1897. On the opposite side of Emerson Street stands the National Bank of New Zealand, followed by the Bank of Australasia. The Masonic Hotel is located on corner of Hastings Street and Tennyson Street. Businesses listed on the building’s awnings include P Campbell, A Eccles (chemist), and R T Smythe (bookseller and stationer). On the opposite side of the intersection is the New Zealand Insurance Company building.
