About this object
View of Hastings Street looking towards Napier Hill, possibly taken in the 1890s. In the foreground of the photograph the New Zealand Insurance Company building stands on the corner of Hastings Street and Tennyson Street. Signs for D D Hyde and Company (hairdressers and tobacconists) appear in the ground floor windows, while above signs for the New Zealand Underwriters Association can be seen in the first floor windows. Other businesses whose premises are visible along this side of the road include Davies and Evans (tailors) and the Napier Drapery Company.

In the distance, the Colonial Bank is visible on the corner of Hastings Street and Browning Street. The Clarendon Hotel is visible at the foot of Shakespeare Road.

Pedestrians and horse drawn carriages are visible along the street.
