About this object
View of Hastings Street from Browning Street taken in the late 1870s or early 1880s. On the extreme left of the image, R Hannah and Company (The Hawke’s Bay and Napier Cash Boot Market) stands on the corner of Hastings Street and Browning Street. Among the businesses that are visible along the left side of the street are R Cato (commercial agent), W Prebble (fruiterer), Jacob’s Fancy Repository, David Levi (tobacconist), the Masonic Hotel, Neal and Close (draper and clothier), and H Williams (ironmonger).

On the extreme right of the image the old Post Office stands on the corner of Hastings Street and Browning Street. Behind the Post Office are the Bank of New Zealand and the premises of Ringland and Thomas (hatters and hosiers).

Pedestrians and horse drawn carriages are visible along the street.
