About this object
View of Hastings Street from the corner of Browning Street taken in the late 1870s or early 1880s. On the extreme left of the image, R Hannah and Company (The Hawke’s Bay and Napier Cash Boot Market) stands on the corner of Hastings Street and Browning Street. Among the businesses that are visible along the left side of the street are W Prebble (fruiterer), Jacob’s Fancy Repository, David Levi (tobacconist), the Masonic Hotel, S E Cooper (watchmaker and jeweller), Garrett Brothers Boot Shoe Depot (located in Dublin House), the New Zealand Insurance Company, P F Colledge (watchmaker and jeweller), H Williams (ironmonger), and R T Smythe (bookseller and stationer).

Among the buildings that are visible on the opposite side of the street are the premises of Ringland and Thomas (hatters and hosiers), Ruddock and Fryer, and the New Zealand Clothing Company.

Pedestrians and horse drawn carriages are visible along the street.
