Brief Description
Letter and envelope from George W Heslop to Arthur Bowman of Port Ahuriri. This letter was sent while the author was on active service during the Second Anglo-Boer War.

a) The letter mentions his general health, the Battle of Crocodile (Elands) River and the breaking up of his original contingent due to casualties and re-deployment into Constabulary. He also mentions that the letter has been written while on night watch at Pretoria Station.

The letter bears a purple ink stamp that reads: Pretoria.

b) An envelope bearing a one penny stamp and four ink stamps, one from South Africa and three from New Zealand. Handwritten along the top of the envelope are the words: on active service.
