About this object
A photograph depicting the destruction caused to central Hastings by the Hawke's Bay earthquake on the 3rd of February 1931. In the mid ground of the photograph are the remains of the Grand Hotel on the corner of Heretaunga and Russell Streets. Across the railway lines, on the corner of Railway Road and Heretaunga Street, is the damaged Club Tearooms. The exterior walls have fallen exposing the interior. Next to this is the Bank of New Zealand. Across Heretaunga Street, moving right to left, are the Pacific Hotel, Baird's Drapers and the Hastings Hotel.
