About this object
View of Napier looking south from Bluff Hill towards Awatoto, possibly taken in the 1880s. Byron Street is visible at the base of Bluff Hill. The premises of furniture retailer Large and Townley is visible along Byron Street. The Napier Courthouse is visible at the intersection of Browning Street and Marine Parade. The Athenaeum stands on the corner of Browning Street and Herschell Street. Behind the museum, the Borough Council Chambers and the Fire Engine Station are located on Herschell Street. Among the businesses whose premises can be identified by the signage that appears on the building façades are the Colonial Mutual Life Assurance Company, W Cato’s Office and Sample Room, and R Hannah and Company on Browning Street; the New Zealand HB Clothing Factory, Criterion Hotel, Union Bank of Australia, and ironmonger H Williams on Hastings Street; Neal and Close on Emerson Street; and the Masonic Hotel on Marine Parade. On the extreme right of the image the premises of Ruddock and Fryer are in the process of being constructed or modified.

The shallow lagoon is visible on the right side of the image. Cape Kidnappers is visible in the distance.
