About this object
View of Napier looking south from Bluff Hill thought to have been taken between 1865 and 1873. At the base of Bluff Hill is the intersection of Byron Street and Browning Street. The Athenaeum (built 1865) is located at the east end of Browning Street. The Bank of New Zealand is located on the corner of Browning Street and Hastings Street. To the right, St John’s Church (1862) is located at the base of Napier Hill. Hastings Street is lined with commercial premises and houses. Tennyson Street, Emerson Street and Dickens Street are also visible.

The shallow lagoon is visible on the right side of the image. Cape Kidnappers is visible in the distance.
