About this object
A photograph depicting the opening of the Napier Breakwater on the 22nd of October 1895. The photograph is taken from Bluff Hill looking down on the breakwater and Glasgow Wharf.

There are people visible along the length of the breakwater and on Glasgow Wharf where a ship covered in flags is moored. There are several ships, sailing boats and other vessels on the harbour.

On the beach visible at the lower left of the photograph there are spectators. There are wooden crates and other material shored up along the edge of the road leading onto the breakwater. These were likely present for reasons of preservation from erosion or rough seas.

Photographer unknown.
