About this object
A stereoscope photograph of a northerly view of the settlement of Te Aro with the harbour in the background. The photograph appears to have been taken in the mid ninetheenth century.
From the obviously high elevation of this photograph, it seems likely that the photograph was taken from Edward Catchpool's three storied flour mill. This mill occupied a back section in Willis Street. The view over the backyards of properties looks over to Manners Street which is thinly built up at this period. Beyond this the harbour is visible, where the Willis Street wharves jut out into the sea.
Photographer: George Dalrymple Monteith.
