About this object
View of the White's Building (later known as the New Zealand Insurance Building) taken from the intersection of Tennyson Street and Herschell Street, possibly in 1933. Designed in the art deco style by J A Louis Hay, this building was completed in 1932. Signs at street level advertise Nesbitt and Nesbitt (accountants), P & O Vacation Company, Ocean Accident and Guarantee Corporation Limited, Kinross White Limited (merchants), and the London and Lancaster Insurance Company Limited (fire, accident and marine insurance). The premises of Alex M Williams (dentist) are located on the first floor. Along Herschell Street, a man removes a spare tyre from the back of a motor vehicle.

Behind the White’s Building, construction work appears to be taking place on the site of the Robert Holt Building, which was built on the corner of Tennyson Street and Hasting Street in 1933. On the opposite side of Hastings Street stands the Bryant’s Building. Designed by Finch & Westerholm, this building was completed in 1933.
