About this object
This photograph depicts the shopping area developed in Memorial and Clive Squares after the Hawke's Bay earthquake on the 3rd of February 1931. Nicknamed 'tin town' because of the corrugated iron roofs on the buildings, the complex opened on the 16th of March 1931. Thirty-two shops occupied Clive Square, with a further twenty-two in Memorial Square. F Rice, confectioners, is possibly located on the left of the photograph.
