About this object
View of the intersection of Marine Parade and Herschell Street looking north, thought to have been taken in January 1896. In the foreground is the band rotunda donated to the Borough of Napier by Neal and Close in 1894. Young trees have been planted around the band rotunda. Tree guards enclose each of the trees. In front of the band rotunda is a high power gas lamp presented by Napier Gas Company Limited.

Behind the band rotunda is the Borough Council Chambers (built 1874). On the extreme left, the corner of the Masonic Hotel is visible. Behind the hotel is the intersection of Tennyson Street and Herschell Street. Herschell Street is lined with trees. To the right of the Borough Council Chambers is the Napier Courthouse (designed by William Henry Clayton, completed 1875). Marine Parade is lined with young Norfolk Island Pines. Tree guards enclose each of the trees. Napier Hill is visible in the background.
