About this object
View of Marine Parade looking south taken from the roof of the Municipal Baths in 1935 or 1936. The children’s playground is located in the foreground. Further along the esplanade are the Veronica Sunbay (designed by J T Watson, built 1934), the Kirk Sundial (designed by J A Louis Hay), the Skating Rink, and the Soundshell (designed by J T Watson, built 1935). Mature Norfolk Island Pines, streetlights and park benches line the seaward side of Marine Parade. The parade is crowded with people. The Napier Courthouse (designed by William Henry Clayton, completed 1875) is visible on the extreme right of the photograph. Two young pines surrounded by tree guards have been planted near the courthouse. Cape Kidnappers is visible in the distance.
