About this object
View of Herschell Street taken from the intersection of Marine Parade and Herschell Street looking north taken around 1932-35. In the foreground is a small raised park featuring trees and planted gardens. On the extreme left stands the Masonic Hotel (completed 1932) designed by the architectural firm Prouse & Wilson. Behind the hotel is the intersection of Marine Parade, Tennyson Street and Herschell Street. On the left side of the intersection is the White’s Building (later known as the New Zealand Insurance Building) designed by J A Louis Hay, completed 1932. Other buildings visible along Herschell Street include the Hay Building (designed by J A Louis Hay, completed 1932), Parker's Chambers (designed by J A Louis Hay, 1929), and the County Council Chambers (1908-10). On the right of the image stands the Borough Council Chambers (built 1874). Napier Hill is visible in the background.
