About this object
View of Marine Parade taken from the gardens looking towards the Central Business District. In the foreground are the Marine Parade gardens designed by Stanley Natusch and J A Louis Hay. The Kirk Sundial designed by J A Louis Hay is located at the south end of the gardens. A man stands to the left of the sun dial. To the left of the sun dial is the Skating Rink.
In the background, the Masonic Hotel (designed by the architectural firm Prouse & Wilson, completed 1932) stands on Marine Parade. To the right of the hotel is the intersection of Marine Parade, Tennyson Street and Herschell Street. On the right side of the intersection is the White’s Building (later known as the New Zealand Insurance Building) designed by J A Louis Hay, which was completed in 1932. Further along Tennyson Street is the Bryant’s Building (completed 1933) designed by Finch & Westerholm. Behind the Bryant’s Building, the spire of the damaged St John’s Cathedral is visible. Napier Hill can be seen in the background.
