About this object
An image illustrating repairs to the Waitangi Bridge that spans the Tutaekuri River.

The photograph shows a pile of wood and railway sleepers underneath a concrete structure. This is probably a temporary support for the bridge. The photograph was taken underneath the Waitangi Bridge.

There is a round hole in the wood above the sleepers. The sun is shining through creating a pool of light. There are wires and miscellaneous items at the of the image sitting on the beam.

The repairs were required after severe flooding of the region in April 1938. Four spans of the bridge subsided and the river bed was scoured by the waters to a depth of 12.19 metres. The repairs to Waitangi Bridge cost £10,746.
