About this object
View of Marine Parade looking north, thought to have been taken in 1907. In the foreground is the South African War Memorial (1906). On the extreme left of the image stands the Masonic Hotel. The premises of the London Lancaster Fire Insurance Company are located immediately behind the hotel. The band rotunda donated to the Borough of Napier by Neal and Close in 1894 and the Borough Council Chambers (built 1874) stand on the corner of Marine Parade and Herschell Street. The band rotunda is surrounded by young trees. Further along Marine Parade, the Napier Courthouse (designed by William Henry Clayton, completed 1875) is visible. On the opposite side of the street, Marine Parade is lined with Norfolk Island Pines. Tree guards enclose each of the trees. Bluff Hill is visible in the distance.
