About this object
This photograph depicts an interior view of the Westerman's Building in Hastings after the Hawke's Bay earthquake on the 3rd of February 1931.

Westerman and Company expanded the business in 1921 and built a new store on the corner of Heretaunga and Russell Streets, Hastings. Behind the shop was a sample room, listed as being on Eastbourne Street. The sample room was rented to commercial travellers and company representatives who wished to display their wares.

The building was severely damaged in the earthquake. The destruction caused to the interior is visible in the photograph.

The photographer is thought to be Frank L Moodie, architect.
