About this object
An image of men laying drain pipes outside houses on a Napier South Street. This image is thought to be linked to recovery efforts in the period following the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake.

The drain pipe is being lowered into a pre-dug hole outside a residential property. Piles of soil are visible with a spade dug into the pile of earth in the foreground of the image.

A group of men are standing observing the two men lowering one end of the pipe. The men are wearing gumboots and are muddy, possibly having just dug the hole. Work jackets are noticeable hanging on the white picket fence.

The buildings in the background are wooden one storied dwellings. Norfolk Pines are discernible in the distance in the top left portion of the image.
