About this object
View of Marine Parade looking towards Bluff Hill, possibly taken in 1919. In the foreground is the South African War Memorial (1906). On the extreme left of the image stands the Masonic Hotel. The band rotunda donated to the Borough of Napier by Neal and Close in 1894 and the Borough Council Chambers (built 1874) stand on the corner of Marine Parade and Herschell Street. The band rotunda is surrounded by young trees. Further along Marine Parade, the Napier Courthouse (designed by William Henry Clayton, completed 1875) is visible. Behind the Courthouse, a large building (possibly Dr Walter William Moore's Upoko Poito Private Hospital, built 1919) appears to be under construction. On the opposite side of the street, Marine Parade is lined with Norfolk Island Pines. Bluff Hill is visible in the distance.
