About this object
This photograph depicts the Municipal Theatre on Hastings Street in Hastings after the Hawke's Bay earthquake on the 3rd of February 1931.
Designed by Henry Eli White, the Municipal Theatre was built in 1915. The Theatre is noted as being one of the earliest examples of Spanish Mission style in New Zealand and having a lavish Art Nouveau interior.
The theatre was damaged by the earthquake. The stage and dressing rooms were rebuilt in reinforced concrete, the auditorium strengthened and each tower roof removed and replaced to a different design.
The photographer is thought to be Frank L Moodie, architect.
